Reconstruction of the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace and completion of the parish center in Prague - Lhotka

collaboration with VYŠEHRAD atelier s.r.o.

project:      2012 - 2025

realization: -

client:         Roman Catholic parish of Our Lady of Peace, Prague - Lhotka

The Lhotka church has always been expanded rather provisionally, according to the possibilities of its time. One of the largest parishes in Prague therefore decided to pursue a project addressing the most pressing issues of the church and the existing rectory: the awkward liturgical layout of the church, the outdated parish facilities, and the inadequate housing for clergy.

In collaboration with our colleagues from Vyšehrad atelier, we designed a complete reconstruction of the church and an extension forming a new parish center that meets today's standards and requirements. The church will receive the originally intended three-aisle layout, entirely new facilities, and upgraded technical systems to satisfy modern operational and comfort demands. Adjoining the church will be the new parish center – Centrum Lhotka – complementing the sacred space with a multipurpose hall, clubrooms, and additional facilities for pastoral, community, and other social activities.

The architectural concept is based on a dialogue between the functionalist sacred building, defined by the clear vertical line of its tower, and the modern addition, which is arranged in a distinctly horizontal manner. The entrances to both parts open toward the public space and the surrounding pathways. This chosen form reinforces the purpose of the complex: an open environment that invites people to enter and participate.
